Power surges, also known as transient over-voltages, occur when the voltage of the supply suddenly spikes to an increased level for a fraction of a second. They are becoming more common in the UK and can be caused by:
- Nearby lightning strikes
- Switching occurring on the incoming supply
- Electrical faults
- Large appliances with inductive loads (like motors, fridges) cycling on and off.
Modern electronic devices can be sensitive to even small voltage surges, which cause damage over time and reduce lifespan. Larger surges can result in sudden catastrophic failure. Surges are too brief to operate standard circuit breakers (MCBs). The 18th edition of the UK wiring regulations mandated the installation of a Surge Protection Device (SPD) in new domestic consumer units. SPDs work by safely channelling the surge current to earth, preventing it from reaching appliances.
Developed in response to customer demand, our plug-in surge protector now enables the same level of protection from your beloved camper/caravan. Simply plug the unit in between your camper/caravan and hook-up cable. As long as the indicator window on the device is showing green, you have instant protection.
Specification:
- Fusebox or Geya branded Surge Protection Device (SPD)
- Nominal discharge current 20kA
- Max. discharge current 40kA
- Response time 25ns
- Indicator window shows green when unit is operating normally and red when it's experienced a surge so significant that the cartridge needs to be replaced.
- Heavy duty German manufactured Menneke 230v 16A CEE IEC60309 commando connectors.
