Building on the success of our popular heavy duty time switches, this unit provides the only plug-in photocell solution in the UK for high power applications, including LED lighting. Simply plug the unit in between the lights/appliance and the supply socket and when the light level falls below the set threshold, power to the socket is turned on.
Photocells use a relay, which is a cheap, compact way of controlling resistive loads such as incandescent lights. However, LED lights experience a spike of power much higher than the specified output of the power supply, for a short period each time they are turned on. This is known as an 'inrush current'.
The inrush current from larger LED installation can damage standard relay based photocells. To overcome this issue, instead of using the relay within the photocell to switch the load directly, our units connect it's output to a high quality contactor, which then switches the load.
Contactors work using the same principle as a relay, but they are much larger and far better suited to switching higher current inductive loads. The picture below shows the sheer size difference between a typical contactor (left) and relay (right); when it comes to switching LEDs, contact size really does make a difference.
Contactor rating:
Unit | Resistive | Inductive |
230v 16/32A | 40A (AC-7a) | 15A (AC-7b) |
Plug-in Wi-Fi and digital timer units are also available as an alternative, to provide remote programming and switching.
