110v Ambulance/emergency vehicle shoreline cables

Ambulances and other emergency vehicles are often fitted with a power inlet. The inlet is used to connect the vehicle to mains power to overcome the constant power draw of radios, mobile data terminals and medical devices when parked.

A shoreline cable is the cable used to connect the vehicle to a source of power. It needs to have the correct vehicle connector on one end and a plug suitable for the socket you will be using at the other.

Vehicles with a 110v inlet must be connected via a 110v safety isolating transformer and never directly to the 230v mains. Particular care must be taken when selecting a suitable transformer, with a range available here.

Due to the harsh environment in which they will be used, yellow 'artic' cable is simply not robust enough. Our leads are made in our UK workshop from black H07RN-F rubber or orange marine grade H07BQ-F rubber cable. We also only use extra thick 2.5mmsq cable. Whilst cheaper 1.5mmsq cables are available online, they do not comply with the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

Typical Application

The picture below illustrates a typical application. An ambulance fitted with a 110v 15A Kussmaul Super 15 Auto-eject inlet is connected to a 16A CEE 60309 'Commando' socket on a 110v transformer. The transformer is then connected to the 230v mains supply.

Which lead do I need?

Use the table below to identify the connector on your shoreline cable and the inlet on the vehicle, which will determine the lead required. Further information on using emergency vehicle inlets is provided in our Guide to Ambulance and Emergency Vehicle Connectors.
